When there is a lot of moisture in the air, though, the rate at which sweat can evaporate from (and cool) the skin is reduced. When we are hot, our bodies sweat to cool us down. In the tropics, there have been examples where the air temperature is 29 ☌ but it feels like 38 ☌! HumidityĪt higher temperatures, wind chill is less significant and humidity plays a greater role in how warm you feel. Even closer to sea level, you might be walking your dog on a 22 ☌ day, so you don’t take a jumper, but the wind chill makes it feel like 15 ☌-quite uncomfortable. In alpine areas, the ambient temperature could be around –1 ☌, for example, but the apparent temperature could be –15 ☌. ![]() You have a layer of warmer air around your body that can insulate you from cooler surrounding air wind strips this layer away and allows you to feel more of the cold. In the cooler months, particularly in alpine areas, the wind can make conditions feel much colder than the ambient temperature. There can be a considerable difference between the two. But by taking into account wind and humidity we also calculate ‘apparent temperature’-how warm you might feel. Our instruments measure ‘ambient temperature’-how warm the air is in the shade and sheltered from the wind. Simply match the air temperature on the horizontal axis at the top with the wind speed on the vertical axis along the left-hand side, find where the two values intersect, and that number is your wind chill.Have you ever looked at the recorded temperature for your area and thought ‘It felt colder than that’? You could be right. The National Weather Service developed the chart below to easily determine the wind chill. When winds are light – 3 mph or lower – the wind chill is not a factor because the thin layer of warm air stays close to your skin. Therefore, the stronger the winds, the colder the air will feel. As wind speeds increase, the amount of heat lost from your body also increases. ![]() HOW COLD CAN TEMPERATURES GET DURING THE COLDEST TIME OF YEAR?Ī thin layer of warm air, produced by body heat, exists just above your skin. That means on a windy day in the winter, the wind chill will be notably lower than the actual air temperature. The wind chill is how cold the air feels on your skin when factoring in the wind for any temperature at or below 50 degrees with wind speeds above 3 mph. The orange areas indicate danger, with muscle cramps and/or heat exhaustion likely if outdoors for too long heatstroke is also possible with prolonged exposure and/or physical activity such as running or biking. The red areas on the heat index chart indicate extreme danger, meaning there’s a serious risk of heatstroke if you spend any significant amount of time outdoors in those conditions. These heat index values were formulated for shady, light-wind conditions, but you should be aware that exposure to full sunshine can increase the "feels-like" temperature by as much as 15 degrees, according to the NWS.
